Australia’s First Employment and Human Rights Advocacy Mobile Office

Writer: Brian AJ Newman LLBBrian AJ Newman LLB

At 1800ADVOCATES, we believe in meeting people where they are—both physically and metaphorically. That’s why the 1800NOWINNOFEE mobile office has hit the road, traversing South-East Queensland, engaging directly with workers from all walks of life. Since commissioning this innovative initiative, the mobile office has become a bridge between advocacy and the community, making it easier for individuals to access support and explore their rights, regardless of their profession or situation.

Connecting Communities and Empowering Individuals

The 1800NOWINNOFEE mobile office is more than just a workspace on wheels; it symbolises accessibility and connection. For too long, workers—whether they be construction labourers, healthcare professionals, office employees, or legal practitioners—have found it difficult to access timely support for workplace issues. The mobile office changes this, travelling to where people live and work to help them better understand their employment rights and protections.

Our engagement with workers from diverse backgrounds has highlighted the challenges that different industries and professions face. Whether it’s labourers raising concerns about unpaid wages, retail staff reporting bullying, or professionals questioning redundancies or adverse action, we’ve been able to provide tailored guidance that acknowledges the complexities of each case.

A Diverse Array of Enquiries

Since launching the mobile office, we’ve encountered a wide variety of queries from workers across South-East Queensland. From general protections breaches to unfair dismissal claims, wage disputes, and workplace discrimination matters, no two days are the same.

• Labourers and Tradespeople: Many of our conversations have focused on issues such as underpayment, safety breaches, and unlawful terminations. Workers from these industries are often unaware of the protections available to them under the Fair Work Act.

• Retail and Hospitality Employees: These sectors continue to face high turnover and challenging work environments, with frequent enquiries about bullying, casual conversion rights, and entitlements for long-term employees.

• Professional Services and Legal Practitioners: Interestingly, even professionals in the legal and financial sectors have approached the mobile office. Many of these individuals seek guidance on complex matters such as contract disputes, redundancy arrangements, or adverse action following whistleblowing.

The diversity of the people we’ve met is a testament to the importance of employment rights across all industries. From apprentices to senior executives, everyone deserves fair treatment in the workplace, and we are committed to ensuring they receive the support they need.

Breaking Down Barriers to Access

By taking our services directly to the community, the mobile office addresses several barriers that traditionally limit workers’ ability to seek help. Time, distance, and the fear of speaking up are all factors that often prevent individuals from accessing advocacy services. With the mobile office, there is no need for people to travel to a central office or book a formal appointment—they can simply walk up and have a conversation with one of our advocates.

Our visits to remote and suburban locations have revealed that many workers feel isolated when facing workplace issues, particularly if they believe their concerns will not be taken seriously. The mobile office fosters trust and connection, helping workers realise they are not alone and that solutions are within reach.

Building Awareness and Empowering Workers

Part of the mobile office’s mission is to educate workers about their rights and protections. We provide information about unfair dismissal, general protections, wage entitlements, workplace discrimination, and other key issues that affect workers across industries. Our goal is to empower individuals with the knowledge they need to take action and protect their rights.

We’ve also noticed a growing interest in no-win-no-fee advocacy, especially among workers who may feel discouraged by the financial risks of pursuing legal action. The 1800NOWINNOFEE initiative offers peace of mind by ensuring that workers can seek justice without fear of crippling costs, levelling the playing field for all.

A New Era of Advocacy

The commissioning of the mobile office has opened up new opportunities for engagement and advocacy. What began as an experiment in accessibility has quickly become a cornerstone of our mission, enabling us to expand our reach and make meaningful connections with individuals across South-East Queensland. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with workers from all walks of life expressing gratitude for having a support service that is both accessible and responsive.

We are excited about the future of the mobile office and the continued opportunities to meet new people, listen to their stories, and provide the support they need. Every interaction serves as a reminder that advocacy is not confined to boardrooms or courtrooms—it happens in the everyday conversations between people who care about fairness and justice.

Looking Forward

The 1800NOWINNOFEE mobile office will continue its journey through South-East Queensland, meeting new people and engaging with communities across the region. We are committed to ensuring that every worker, regardless of their background or profession, can access the support they need to stand up for their rights.

As we move forward, the mobile office will remain a vital part of our efforts to build stronger, fairer workplaces. Whether you’re a labourer, a retail worker, a healthcare professional, or a lawyer, the 1800NOWINNOFEE team is here to listen, support, and advocate for you. Our journey is just beginning, and we look forward to seeing where the road takes us next.
